Creating your own vegan body and face soaps can be a rewarding and educational experience. This guide provides a straightforward recipe that incorporates natural ingredients, ensuring a gentle and moisturizing product suitable for various skin types. The following recipe yields approximately 10 bars of soap, depending on the mold size used.
Ingredients:
- 16 ounces of coconut oil
- 16 ounces of olive oil
- 16 ounces of palm oil
- 16 ounces of distilled water
- 6.4 ounces of sodium hydroxide (lye)
- Essential oils (optional, for fragrance)
- Natural colorants (optional, for aesthetic appeal)
Equipment Needed:
- Digital scale
- Heat-resistant mixing bowls
- Stick blender
- Soap mold
- Safety goggles and gloves
- Thermometer
Instructions:
1. Begin by measuring the distilled water and sodium hydroxide separately. Always add lye to water, never the other way around, to prevent a dangerous reaction. Stir gently until dissolved, and allow the mixture to cool to around 100°F.
2. In a separate bowl, measure and melt the coconut oil. Once melted, combine it with the olive and palm oils. Allow this mixture to cool to approximately 100°F as well.
3. When both mixtures are at the desired temperature, slowly pour the lye solution into the oils while blending with a stick blender. Continue blending until the mixture reaches "trace," which is the point where it thickens and leaves a trail on the surface when drizzled.
4. At this stage, you may add essential oils for fragrance and any natural colorants if desired. Mix thoroughly to ensure even distribution.
5. Pour the soap mixture into the mold and cover it with a towel to insulate. Allow it to sit for 24 to 48 hours until it hardens.
6. Once solidified, remove the soap from the mold and cut it into bars. Allow the bars to cure in a cool, dry place for 4 to 6 weeks before use. This curing process is essential as it allows the soap to fully saponify and ensures a gentle product.
By following this recipe, you can create a vegan soap that not only cleanses but also nourishes the skin. The use of natural oils provides hydration, while the absence of animal products aligns with vegan principles. This homemade soap can serve as an excellent addition to your skincare routine or as a thoughtful gift.
